Welcome! We are Plate and Paper, an adorable duo with a penchant for design, entertaining and food. Our interests lie in creating clever, delightful parties that highlight budget-conscious alternatives and show love to local businesses.
Our hope is to speak candidly about entertaining and to show you how to turn the elements of your party into a successful event. From favorite recipes to paper goods, we want to involve you, our lovely readers, throughout the whole process. We even have a Resources page dedicated to sharing our favorite businesses and services so that you can equip yourself with the best tools to get the job done.
Jess graduated from Grand Valley State University in Western Michigan in 2008. Stemming from a childhood affinity for all things Martha Stewart, and divine inspiration in the form of the 2000 hit film, “What Women Want,” Jess had her mind set for years prior on the pursuit of graphic design.
Upon graduation, Jess moved to Minneapolis to be closer to her fellow designer and now-husband, Ross. For the past few years, she has worked as a stationery designer, specializing in designing products and paper goods, photo styling, store displays, and custom wedding design. She freelances in her spare time and is constantly scheming up new career paths. Jess brings a keen eye for color, pattern, and typography to every project. She thinks it’s perfectly normal to spend a Friday night crafting rather than going out on the town.
Apart from Martha Stewart and post-millennial Mel Gibson romantic comedies, Jess is also passionate about throwing parties, her mischievous rabbit, writing and receiving snail mail, collecting heaps of printed inspiration, cooking up a storm, working with Ross to make their new house feel like their home, and singing every word to every song of Kanye West’s “College Dropout” while alone in the car.
Mandy is the other half of Plate & Paper. Since childhood, she has pursued a variety of creative endeavors (painting, architectural Lego building, web design for her now defunct Michelle Branch fansite, etc.), and has enjoyed writing since then, too. Hence, blogging seemed like a natural step when Jess asked her to join Plate & Paper.
Mandy attended the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities and studied Graphic Design and a bit of Advertising. She developed a deep love for all things handmade (she even took four studios classes one semester, two of which were printmaking-related, and almost died trying to complete her course load) and has since attempted to incorporate some element of the human hand into her work. Mandy also became friends with Jess’ now-husband, Ross, during college (and thus Jess and Mandy’s friendship began in earnest).
She currently also works as a product designer for a small boutique stationery company, where she enjoys (and sometimes curses) being involved in every aspect of product development (we’re talking product design, writing specs, talking with manufacturers, photo styling, catalog layout and trade show booth design).
When Mandy is not blogging, she enjoys baking (with varied success), exploring her beautiful Minneapolis neighborhood, organizing and decorating her newish apartment, dreaming of kitties and sampling the tasty beverages her loving boyfriend concocts for her.
